About ASTP

The Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP) provides free specialised transport to and from school for eligible students with a disability.

The objective

Sitback was engaged by the NSW Department of Education to conduct user experience research and design for a new app to manage the Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP).

The challenge

The Assisted School Travel Program (ASTP) provides free specialised transport to and from school for eligible students with a disability.

The ASTP used the Student Transport Management System (STMS) to manage a number of critical functions essential to running the program but they were looking to develop a new app.

The goal of the new app was to be a one-stop shop to meet the business needs of the ASTP. Most importantly, everything that the UX team designed had to be focused on child protection.

Our process

User and business requirements were identified during a discovery phase consisting of a documentation review, stakeholder interviews, contextual enquiries, and expert review.

Requirements were then translated into personas and experience maps representing the key users of the STMS, including finance and logistical staff within the ASTP, and external contractors.

We then conducted a co-design workshop with representatives of the ASTP and the development team responsible for developing the new app.

The solution

We then developed a series of concept wireframes to illustrate how the new app would work for the most common tasks (as detailed in the user journeys).

Finally, the concept wireframes were tested with the key stakeholders. An interactive prototype was developed and staff at the ASTP were asked to perform certain tasks using the prototype. The feedback from these sessions was then used to update and produce the final deliverable of the project, a full set of annotated wireframes.

The Results

The discovery phase demonstrated our ability to understand a very complex system and identify areas for refinement and improvement, which we then turned into a concrete recommendation on how to proceed.
