Technical Lead (Drupal & PHP)

Role overview

We are seeking a senior Technical Lead (Drupal & PHP) to join Sitback as a long-term leader within our engineering team.

This role goes beyond individual project delivery. You will help grow and mature our Drupal & PHP practice, mentor developers, define technical standards, and work closely with other Technical Leads and the Head of Technology to drive engineering excellence across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

Technical leadership & governance

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple Drupal projects and support engagements.
  • Define, document, and continuously improve development standards, patterns, and best
    practices.
  • Oversee solution architecture to ensure scalability, maintainability, security, and performance.
  • Champion quality through code reviews, testing strategies, and deployment discipline.

Team leadership & line management

  • Line manage and mentor developers, supporting technical growth and career development.
  • Conduct regular one-to-ones, performance feedback, and development planning.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing engineering culture aligned with Sitbackʼs values.

Practice & capability growth

  • Help grow Sitbackʼs Drupal & PHP capability through tooling, accelerators, and reusable
    assets.
  • Contribute to the evolution of internal starter kits and technical accelerators.
  • Support innovation initiatives, including automation and responsible use of AI in development
    workflows.

Delivery & client engagement

  • Act as a senior technical authority on complex or high-risk engagements.
  • Partner with Producers, Project Managers, and Client Services on scoping, estimation, and
    technical strategy.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients by providing clear technical leadership and advice.

Hosting & platform strategy

  • Provide leadership on hosting and platform decisions across Drupal projects.
  • Work with the Head of Technology and other Technical Leads to define preferred hosting
    patterns and standards.
  • Ensure hosting solutions support performance, security, scalability, and long-term
    maintainability.
  • Guide teams on environment configuration, deployment strategies, and platform-specific best
    practices.

Sales & pre-sales support

  • Provide technical input into proposals, estimates, and solution designs.
  • Support sales and client teams by articulating technical approaches and value propositions.

Essential experience & skills

  • 7+ years professional development experience.
  • Deep expertise in Drupal 8/9/10 and PHP.
  • Proven experience in a Technical Lead or Senior Lead Developer role.
  • Strong architectural decision-making capability.
  • Experience line managing developers or leading technical teams.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Drupal APIs and ecosystem.
    • CI/CD and DevOps practices.
    • Security, performance, and accessibility considerations.
  • Hands-on experience delivering Drupal solutions hosted on:
    • AWS and/or Azure.
    • Acquia, Platform.sh / Upsun, Pantheon, or similar managed Drupal platforms.
  • Familiarity with containerised development (DDEV, Lando, Docker).
  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • Experience contributing to the Drupal community or open source projects.
  • Headless Drupal / GraphQL experience.
  • Experience defining or standardising hosting approaches across teams.
  • Exposure to infrastructure-as-code or platform automation.
  • Experience supporting long-running, high-availability production environments.
